On February 2, 2024, the Tropical Ecological Foundation (FUNDETROP) and the Cibao Ecological Society (SOECI) and others, filed an environmental submission to the Secretariat of Environmental Matters of the Free Trade Agreement between the Dominican Republic, Central America and the United States of America -CAFTA-DR(SEM)-, in which they assert that the Dominican Republic is allegedly failing to comply with the effective application of its environmental legislation

In the submission identified as CAALA/24/002 water resources San José de Las Matas, the submitter denounces the alleged water crisis in the municipality of San José de Las Matas and in the entire province of Santiago.
